If driving from the airport, follow the well signed Highway to Hobart

Nearby Hobart Attractions

In the surrounding area you will find fine examples of Georgian, Victorian and Federation dwellings. See the brochure on Heritage Hobart in the apartment for more information.

Two blocks away visit the Old Hobart Courthouse and Gaol, scene of early public hangings in the convict era. The State Library and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery house important historic and contemporary collections well worth visiting. Both are within minutes of easy walking distance. Also adjacent to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is the fascinating Maritime Museum.

CBD shops and supermarkets, the Royal Hobart Hospital and public transport are also nearby.

Take in a play at the oldest theatre in Australia – The historic Theatre Royal or see local productions at The Playhouse. Live music can be found most evenings at pubs in nearby North Hobart. All are within an easy stroll of the apartment. The State Theatre in North Hobart screens art house movies, has great coffee and intimate theatres.

Salamanca Place houses art galleries of quality and range, plus quirky shops and friendly bars, while the new MONA (Museum of New and Old Art) is a visual tour de force. (Take a relaxing ferry ride to MONA or drive).

Hunter Street, the site of Hobart’s early settlement has many fine nooks and crannies, some good coffee shops, plus the Art School.

Enjoy choosing from a wide range of Hobart’s many cafes and restaurants to dine from – both waterfront and North Hobart restaurants and cafes are within 5 minutes’ walk. Try Mures or the fish punts on Hobart’s waterfront for the freshest seafood delights.

Hobart is an intriguing blend of heritage and maritime environments – From the Waterfront, hail a water taxi or take a high speed ferry or a replica sailing vessel on a harbour cruise for the best vantage point to appreciate Hobart’s maritime nature.

Take a trip to the top of Mount Wellington for a “wilderness “experience and an awesome view – brave individuals can cycle down for an unforgettable thrill! Or get a brochure from the Travel Centre on walks on the mountain and enjoy one of the simple pleasures that many Hobartians love – fresh air, magic views and wilderness on the doorstep of a city. Always take a coat though! Don’t miss The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens – a divine place to while away an hour or two. See the garden where Peter Cundall broadcast his ABC Gardening segment “Pete’s Veggie Patch “ from, plus the historic heated wall dating back from colonial days.

Further Afield

Venturing further afield out of Hobart travel to the Tasman Peninsular and Port Arthur Historic site for spectacular coastal scenery and an insight into the harsh convict era of Tasmania’s dramatic past.

Heading south, The Tahune Air walk as part of the Huon Trail provides a pristine forest and waterways experience while Bruny Island is a magic place to explore.

A journey to Mt Field National Park through the Derwent Valley with picturesque town New Norfolk is a magnificent day’s outing especially in Autumn and Winter.

Heading North via the Freycinet Coast to Orford, Swansea, Maria Island has to be one of Australia’s best coastal drives – the scenery is quite simply breathtaking. The beaches nearby and on the Freycinet Peninsula are world class – Wineglass Bay, Friendly Beaches, Spring Beach at Orford – a world away.
